ColombiaMap – a GIS data set for Colombia, available in MapInfo or in ArcGIS format

ColombiaMap is a GIS data set that assembles and displays information pertaining to the geology and metallic mineral resources of Colombia.

ColombiaMap modules, designed to be used together, include Geography, Geology, TS Units, Prospects, and Land Status.

For a detailed description of the data set and for pricing information, click on: ColombiaMap Readme or contact RdC.

The Geography module includes shaded relief, bathymetry and digital elevation models (DEM) along with major infrastructure (towns, cities, highways, political boundaries).

The Geology module provides an up-to-date geologic map (published in 2015) in vector format. It includes the Geography module and is suitable for those who are interested only in the published geology of Colombia.

The TS Units module, which is built on and includes the Geology and Geography modules, provides a tectono-stratigraphic interpretation based on published references. TS Units provides the base for a metallogenic map of Colombia.

The Prospect module, which includes the Geography, Geology, TS Units and Radiometric Dates modules, plot 2100 known metallic mineral mines and prospects. Each mineral occurrence is linked to current information on past production, reserves and resources and references to the literature. The Prospect module can be used to plot a metallogenic map, assess prospectivity and guide exploration.

The Land Status module, which includes Geography, locates over 12000 metallic mineral concessions (attributed with ownership and contract date) and plots the location of national parks, forest reserves and other areas of restricted mineral entry.

Plots provides metallogenic and land status maps as high resolution images.

For a closer view, use your cursor to hover over any map

The Prospect module can be used to:

  • Review resource and production information for individual mineral occurrences.
  • Find references to the literature with more information on specific properties.
  • Evaluate prospectivity by using the distribution of the tectono-stratigraphic terrane that hosts a given deposit type.
  • Answer specific queries, e.g. “Locate and identify all deposits with over 500,000 ounces gold.”
  • Select properties for evaluation and possible acquisition.
  • Design exploration programs to focus on a particular tectono-stratigraphic unit.

The Land Status module can be used to;

  • Identify areas already covered by exploration or extraction concessions.
  • Identify the owner of individual concessions, the contract date and the expiration date.
  • Check for nearby parks, national forests, or other areas of restricted mineral entry.
  • Answer specific queries such as “Locate all concessions held by Minera Occidente, S.A.”

Supplementary Multi-element geochemical data set for Colombia.

For a detailed description of the Supplementary Colombia multielement geochemical database (MapInfo or ArcGIS format), click on ColombiaMap Readme.

Colombian government agencies and mineral exploration companies have, over the years, carried out many regional geochemical sampling surveys. The Colombia multielement geochemical database offered by Recursos del Caribe, S.A. (RdC) consists of the following modules, all in ArcGIS or MapInfo format:

SGC-2009 map of geochemical anomalies: a geochemical anomaly map of Colombia published by Prieto et al. (2009).

SGC-2010 data set: a compilation of multielement geochemical data (150 surveys) once available for free download on the SGC website. This database consists of multielement data for 168,656 samples, including 72,536 stream sediment samples. This SGC database is riddled with errors and is no longer posted on the SGC website.

MDRU-2016 data set: a compilation of multielement geochemical data for 76,092 stream sediment samples used to be available for free download on the SGC website. MDRU’s preparation of the data set involved careful checking of sample locations and geochemical data against the original sources. Recursos del Caribe (RdC), starting with all 56 separate ArcGIS project files in the MDRU-2016 data set, consolidated them into a single file for all 56 elements (by column) and all 76,092 samples (by row).

RdC-2025 data set: Using the SGC-2010 data set as a starting point, Recursos del Caribe, S.A. took the raw analytical data, converted text to numeric fields, corrected 772 duplicate entries and 542 data entry errors, eliminated 65,513 empty records, and added 54,553 missing sample locations. RdC also added the MDRU-2016 data (76,092 samples) and eliminated 4692 empty records. The result is a user-friendly GIS database that can be confidently applied to exploration. The table below lists the number of samples and elements analyzed. The map below shows sample locations.

Testimonial

“Newmont has purchased multiple products including the Central America, Greater Antilles, and Colombia data sets and the Colombia Geochemical Database.  These digital data sets provide the geological, geochemical, mineral occurrence, and tenement frameworks of each region that lays the foundation to build upon future exploration databases and facilitates a quick start-up of early exploration programs.  The compilations have saved us much time and expense, and Carl’s comprehensive geologic interpretations are an added bonus.”
